And then when I went back and tried to play a first-person shooter - Dead Space - something had changed. I used to play Doom, Doom II, and Quake, as well as Decent, back in the day, for hours and hours and hours and hours at a time. You'll find Diaspora here (you'll want the first release and patches 1.1 and 1.1.1) But there are several others you can try. I'm biased (cause I'm the team lead) but I'd suggest trying the Battlestar Galactica game Diaspora. If you've lost the original CD's there are still games written using the engine which are available for free. Have you tried FS2_Open? If you have the original CDs you'll find a massively upgraded version of the original campaign with tonnes of fan made (but high quality) campaigns. Tachyon, complete with the Bruce Campbell voice work, is another classic, but it doesn't come close to Freespace in intensity and/or nerd-cred. That change made it beautiful, even at 640x480. It was also the first game that made me buy a 3D accelerator (a separate piece of hardware at the time for those too young to remember this). If I remember correctly, Freespace used like 40 keys on the keyboard and you had to use them all to survive some of that shit, but when you were in the zone, that game was a fantastic space opera. Freelancer was decent as well, and hell, Colony Wars on the PSOne (again) was fairly good.

FREESPACE 3 KICKSTARTER SIMULATOR

I so, so want a good single player space action simulator again now. How did I forget Freespace? I need to go protect the Galatea! Also, as the article states, it's a single player game, so there's no embarrassment for not knowing what the hell you're doing while playing against experienced players.īacked! Fingers crossed they get around to FreeSpace after they get the multiplayer out! It's available for Windows, Mac, and Steam OS. It's also pretty easy to control with a mouse and keyboard (like Freelancer was). It's a very modernized Descent-like game that may help you get acquainted with 6-DOF style games in that the maps are far less complex than those found in Descent. If you have Steam, you can get Sublevel Zero for $12. Much like IPA beer, it's an acquired taste, but once you get it, it's great. You can keep your bearings a lot better when the sky doesn't look exactly like the ground. If you try something like Tom Clancy's HAWX first (which allows inverted flight, but it's a familiar environment - Earth), that may help. Descent (and most space sims) are harder to digest because there actually is no "ground". It takes about an hour, maybe two, before it clicks. Elite is a game I really want to enjoy, but I just can't get the knack of flying I could never get the hang of the no up or down/6 degrees freedom thing.
